What answer engine optimization actually is (and is not)

AEO is the work of being machine-readable and citable so an assistant can name you. It is not a ChatGPT placement, a ranking promise, or a new name for blog posts.

A growing share of commercial questions never produce a click. They produce an answer, written by Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or a Google AI Overview. If those systems cannot read a business as a fact, they will not name it. They will name a competitor they can cite, or they will stay silent.

Answer engine optimization is the name that work has acquired. Like most new names in this industry, it is already being sold as a guarantee. This guide is the honest version: what AEO is, what it is not, and how to tell a real program from a pitch.

SEO still matters. It is not the whole job.

Search-engine optimization is the work of being crawlable, indexable, and chosen on a results page. Technical architecture, information architecture, canonicals, Core Web Vitals — that layer does not go away because assistants exist. If a crawler cannot read the site, an answer engine will not either.

AEO sits beside that work. It is the discipline of giving an assistant a source it can trust: a consistent entity, structured data that matches the visible page, a machine-readable site graph (llms.txt and the pages it points at), and off-site citations that agree with each other.

A mention is observed, not contracted

No serious practice can promise that ChatGPT will name you. Models change, retrieval changes, and a competitor with a decade of citations will be named first for a long time. Anyone selling a guaranteed placement is selling something they do not control.

What you can buy is architecture and measurement. Make the business citable. Probe the assistants a buyer actually uses. Record whether they name you, who they name instead, and what a miss implies for the next page. Export the log. If the vendor cannot show the measurement without a rented pixel, walk.

What a real program produces

Entity and sameAs hygiene so the business is one thing across the site, the Business Profile, and the directories that matter. Schema that restates what the page already says — never a fabricated address or a LocalBusiness in a city where there is no office. An llms.txt that tells AI crawlers who you are and which URLs to cite. A citation pass: NAP consistency, directory presence, knowledge-graph hygiene.

Then the unglamorous part: unique FAQs a buyer actually types, resource pages that answer a specific question, and internal links that form a topical cluster instead of a blog calendar. Answer engines cite specific pages. They do not cite 'we posted twice a week.'

How to tell a pitch from a program

Ask three questions. Will you guarantee a mention or a ranking? (The answer should be no.) Will you install a third-party pixel or a retargeting tag to 'prove' it? (The answer should be no.) Can I export the measurement? (The answer should be yes.)

If the deck leads with a ChatGPT screenshot and a monthly post count, you are buying content production with a new acronym. If it leads with entity, schema, citations, and a probe log you can keep, you are buying the work.
